At 9:09am on the 6th June 2011, Christchurch residents were alarmed by a strong 5.5 aftershock. Reports are that it was felt as a strong jolt followed by about 40 seconds of trembling. Although aftershocks of this magnitude have been predicted, it is still unnerving as there is no warning that they are about to occur.
