Government Announces 5100 Homes to Go after Christchurch Earthquakes

On Thursday, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key made an announcement that thousands of people had been waiting for. This concerned the suburban areas of Christchurch which are to be abandoned due to severe earthquake damage. Many residents have been living in broken homes and using portaloos since the September 4th 2010 earthquake and were anxious to hear the fate of their homes. Large Christchurch Aftershock on 21st June 2011



At 10:34pm on the 21st June, Christchurch and surrounds were rocked by a powerful 5.3 aftershock. Many residents reported that it felt a lot stronger than a 5.3 magnitude quake and caused things to fall and break. It was described as a hard shaking that lasted for quite a while. Christchurch Cathedral Damaged by June Aftershocks

A 6.3 magnitude aftershock on the 13th June 2011 has caused further damage to Christchurch Cathedral. The Rose Window and part of the west wall of the much loved icon collapsed when the aftershock rattled the city at 2:20 pm. Liquefaction and Clean Up after Christchurch Aftershocks

Christchurch was shaken by a 5.7 and 6.3 magnitude aftershock on the 13th June 2011. These caused more damage to the city and infrastructure and also resulted in liquefaction and flooding. Click here to read more about the clean up on the 14th June and how residents are coping without water.




Update on Christchurch Aftershocks and Damage

It is believed that the two stong aftershocks in Christchurch on the 13th June will seal the fate of some buildings in the CBD. News reports stated that approximately 50 more buildings will be on the demolition list after today's shakes. In the 24 hour period of the 13th June, Christchurch experienced 50 aftershocks of varying strengths. Click here for an update on the situation in Christchurch.





Two Major Aftershocks in Christchurch

Drama in Christchurch


Christchurch New Zealand was shaken by two major aftershocks on Monday 13th June. These measured 5.5 and 6.0 on the Richter scale. The second shake caused further damage including the collapse of more buildings, rock falls and liquefaction. Christchurch Airport was evacuated and closed for several hours and most malls and shopping centres are still closed. Click here for more details.

Devastation in Christchurch Central after Earthquake




The Red Zone of Christchurch

The inner city area of Christchurch is referred to as the red zone. Access is tightly controlled and some business owners have still not been able to retrieve stock and belongings from damaged buildings. It is possible to see into the red zone through cordon fences and at the weekends, people are seen wandering around the city, camera in hand as they inspect the damage. Sixth Largest Shake in Christchurch


At 9:09am on the 6th June 2011, Christchurch residents were alarmed by a strong 5.5 aftershock. Reports are that it was felt as a strong jolt followed by about 40 seconds of trembling. Although aftershocks of this magnitude have been predicted, it is still unnerving as there is no warning that they are about to occur.
