Christchurch residents have been given a chance to farewell Christchurch Cathedral before demolition starts. For two weekends in March, a walkway has been opened along Colombo Street to allow access to Cathedral Square. Thousands have taken advantage of this and a never-ending stream of visitors has lined the walkway which is contained between fences. Click here for more details and photos.

Christchurch Store Owners Open Shop in Shipping Containers
As more and more buildings are demolished as a result of the devastating Christchurch earthquakes, shop owners are turning to prefabricated huts and shipping containers to house their businesses. While this is a temporary measure for most, it is a viable one that is being supported by locals. Government Announces 5100 Homes to Go after Christchurch Earthquakes
On Thursday, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key made an announcement that thousands of people had been waiting for. This concerned the suburban areas of Christchurch which are to be abandoned due to severe earthquake damage. Many residents have been living in broken homes and using portaloos since the September 4th 2010 earthquake and were anxious to hear the fate of their homes. Liquefaction and Clean Up after Christchurch Aftershocks
Christchurch was shaken by a 5.7 and 6.3 magnitude aftershock on the 13th June 2011. These caused more damage to the city and infrastructure and also resulted in liquefaction and flooding. Click here to read more about the clean up on the 14th June and how residents are coping without water.
Update on Christchurch Aftershocks and Damage
It is believed that the two stong aftershocks in Christchurch on the 13th June will seal the fate of some buildings in the CBD. News reports stated that approximately 50 more buildings will be on the demolition list after today's shakes. In the 24 hour period of the 13th June, Christchurch experienced 50 aftershocks of varying strengths. Click here for an update on the situation in Christchurch.

Christchurch New Zealand was shaken by two major aftershocks on Monday 13th June. These measured 5.5 and 6.0 on the Richter scale. The second shake caused further damage including the collapse of more buildings, rock falls and liquefaction. Devastation in Christchurch Central after Earthquake
The Red Zone of Christchurch
The inner city area of Christchurch is referred to as the red zone. Access is tightly controlled and some business owners have still not been able to retrieve stock and belongings from damaged buildings. It is possible to see into the red zone through cordon fences and at the weekends, people are seen wandering around the city, camera in hand as they inspect the damage. Chance of Third Major Earthquake in Christchurch
Scientists have done extensive testing on the ground in Canterbury and Christchurch and have concluded that the region has a 23% chance of experiencing a 6.0 to 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the next year. Lady Gaga Helps Christchurch Earthquake Fund Raiser
Lady Gaga recently donated a pair of Gucci shoes that she had worn and signed to help raise funds for the Christcurch Earthquake Appeal. The auction for the shoes closed on Sunday 22nd May 2011 and was part of the Rise Up Christchurch telethon held on the same day. Looting after Christchurch Earthquake
As business owners have been allowed back into the red zone to recover stock and belongings, a number of them have discovered that their properties have been looted. It is believed the thefts occurred shortly after the February earthquake when the focus was on resuce and recovery. During this time, a number of unauthorised people breached the cordon that surrounded the CBD.
Aftershocks continue with eight being reported in the previous 24 hours. Some of these related to the September earthquake while others were the result of the February earthquake.

Access to Christchurch Red Zone
Cera has urged residents and business owners with property in the earthquake-damaged Red Zone of Christchurch to register with ERNI. If their building has been assessed as safe to enter by a structural engineer, they will be given a window of 2 to 3 hours to enter and retrieve personal belongings.
