Christchurch Aftershocks on Boxing Day 2010

Christchurch residents were awoken by a 4.2 aftershock at 2.07am on the 26th December 2010. This was followed by a series of aftershocks inclduing one that measured 4.9 on the Richter scale. Reports have come through that is has been the most damaging aftershock to date. Read on to hear about the damage caused in the CBD and suburban Christchurch.

Large Aftershock Rattles Christchurch, 19th October

A 5.0 aftershock struck Christchurch at 11:32 am on the 19th October. This was felt widely in the city and caused futher damage to buildings and liquefaction in some suburbs. Residents were stressed by the shaking and a mall and the airport were temporarily closed.

Earthquake Book for Sale

All profits from this book will be given to the Red Cross Earthquake Fund. It has a soft cover, measures 19cm X 21cm and contains 32 glossy pages of photos of earthquake damage in Christchurch. Many of the pictures were taken in Christchurch central, shortly after the earthquake and before the CBD was cordoned off. This is a quality coffee-table book and a lasting memory of the destruction caused by the earthquake.

Strong Aftershocks In Christchurch Area

At 4:42pm on the 13th October, Christchurch was shaken by a 5.0 magnitude aftershock. This was enough to give the city a good jolt followed by a few seconds of shakes. After a few quiet days, Christchurch has suffered 4 aftershocks in the space of 8 hours. According to Geonet, these were 3.2, 3.6, 4.1 and 5.0.

An estimated 15,000 to 17,000 chimneys were destroyed during the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch on the 4th September 2010.
