Rotting Food in Christchurch after 2011 Earthquake

Concerns over rotting food in the Christchurch CBD have been mentioned a couple of times in local newspapers. The city has many coffee shops and restaurants and these were all abandoned as people fled from the CBD. The food, people were eating at the time was left on tables. This is besides the supplies that were in fridges and freezers which have been without power since the 22nd February. The resulting stench and piles of rotting food is a problem that Civil Defence are working on. Reports are that a fish market smells so bad that the the smell has impregnated everything in the building leaving it unusable. News stories a couple of weeks ago spoke of maggots crawling in meat and damage by rats that had chewed through wiring in kitchens.
